Sarcopenia is a degenerative disease characterized by a pathological decrease in muscular strength, especially affecting older individuals. Dr. Ingrid Möller was part of the research group from the Universitat of Barcelona that developed a new tool to assess the presence and severity of this muscular insufficiency. The study, published in the RMD Open journal, provides a scoring system for muscle quality based on musculoskeletal ultrasound images, validated with anatomical and histological samples from patients. It is the first imaging method that evaluates muscle quality, an essential factor in the disease. According to the researchers, these results could be useful ‘not only for diagnostic purposes but also for patient monitoring in clinical practice and clinical trials.
